This file contains a compilation of lake water chemistry data collected by Dr. Shelley Arnott's laboratory and processed at the Dorset Environmental Science Centre http://desc.ca/ The data spans the following years: 2006, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016. For information about sample collection and processing, please consult: http://desc.ca/sites/default/files/DESCSubmissionUserManual.pdf The methods have been described in the report by Girard R. E. et al. (2007), history of chemical, physical, and biological methods, sample locations and lake morphometry for the Dorset Environmental Science Centre (1973-2006). This report describes the chemical, physical and biological sample collection methods used in the investigations of lakes and watersheds by staff of the Dorset Environmental Science Centre (DESC, formerly the Dorset Research Centre) for the period 1973 to 2006. Notes
| VARIABLES ID: Unique identifier for each row in the dataset (Not associated to the data collection or processing) LAB_SAMPLE_NUM: Laboratory sample number STATION: Alphanumeric Identifier - Often associated to the latitude and longitude of the sampling site (NAD83-UTM Zone17N). Contact database manager at DESC for further information (currently Johnny Su: johnny.su@ontario.ca). SDATE: Refers to the date of sampling in the format of mm/dd/yyyy SPECIAL_STUDY_ID: Numeric Identifier(integer) - Project ID assigned by Database Manager or sample submission clerk at the DESC (johnny.su@ontario.ca) SAMPLE_GEAR_TYPE: Numeric (integer or decimal) – Gear Identifier 4 tube composite (lake) 5 composite bottle (lake) STYPE: Numeric (integer) - Sample Type and Collection method. Origin of Water 11 grab sample (single depth) lakes, streams 12 depth composite lakes LDESC: Location description. A short or abbreviated description of where the sample originated 34 lakes LAKE_LAT: Latitude in decimal degrees (NAD83-UTM Zone17N) LAKE_LON: Longitude in decimal degrees (NAD83-UTM Zone17N) LDEPTH: Lake depth SECCHI: The Secchi disk measures water transparency or turbidity in bodies of water. The disc is mounted on a pole or line and lowered slowly down in the water. The depth at which the disk is no longer visible is taken as a measure of the transparency of the water. This measure is known as the Secchi depth and is related to water turbidity. Secchi depth in this case is measured in meters - must be present when WLAYER = 5, which is the identifier for Lake Layer sampled, where 5 = euphotic zone (surface to 2 x Secchi). TEST_NAME: oracle name of the test performed AGUT = Silver measured in µg/L ALKT = Total Alkalinity measured in mg/L ALKTI = Gran Alkalinity measured in mg/L ALUT = Aluminium measured in µg/L ANIONS = negatively charged molecules or ions, with more electrons than protons (computed as the sum of all anions measure in meq/L ASUT = Arsenic measured in µg/L BAUT = Barium measured in µg/L BBUT = Boron measured in µg/L BEUT = Beryllium measured in µg/L CAUT = Calcium measured in mg/L CDUT = Cadmium measured in µg/L CLIDUR = Chloride measured in mg/L COLTR = True colour units TCU COND25 = Conductivity at 25 degrees Celsius CONDTY = Conductivity estimated measured in µS/cm COUT = Cobalt measured in µg/L CRUT Chromium measured in µg/L CUUT = Copper measured in µg/L DIC = Dissolved inorganic carbon measured in mg/L DOC = Dissolved Organic Carbon measured in mg/L FEUT = Iron measured in µg/L IBCCAT = cations, a positively charged ion, with fewer electrons than protons computed as the sum of all cations that were measured (meq/L) IONCAL = Ion balance calculation measured in percentage. Used as a check to make sure all the concentrations of all the ions balance out KKUT = Potassium measured in mg/L LANGI = Langeliers index calculation (no units). It is an approximate indicator of the degree of saturation of calcium carbonate in water. It is calculated using the pH, alkalinity, calcium concentration, total dissolved solids, and water temperature of a water sample collected at the tap. If the; Langelier Index is negative, then the water is under saturated with calcium carbonate and will tend to be corrosive in the distribution system. If the Langelier Index is positive, then the water is over saturated with calcium carbonate and will tend to deposit calcium carbonate forming scales in the distribution system. If Langelier Index is close to zero, then the water is just saturated with calcium carbonate and will neither be strongly corrosive or scale forming. MGUT = Magnesium measured in mg/L MNUT = Manganese measured in µg/L MOUT = Molybdenum measured in µg/L NAUT = Sodium measured in mg/L NIUT = Nickel measured in µg/L NNHTUR = Ammonia (+Ammonium) measured in µg/L NNOTUR = Nitrate + Nitrite µg/L NNTKUR = Notrogen total KJELDAHL in µg/L NTOT = Total Nitrogen measured in mg/L PBUT = Lead measured in µg/L PH = pH PHSEST = Saturation PH estimated (no units) PPUT1 = Total Phosphorous measured in µg/L PPUT2 = Total Phosphorous measured in µg/L PPUT3 = Total Phosphorous measured in µg/L PPUT1 - 3 are just replicates. Most of the time, two replicate samples are taken for phosphorus, but sometimes people submit 3. RSFEST = Dissolved solids estimated as mg/L SBUT = Antimony measured in µg/L SEUT = Selenium measured in µg/L SIO3UR = Silicates measured in mg/L SRUT = Strontium measured in µg/L SSO4UR = sulphate measured in mg/L TIUT = Titanium measured in µg/L TLUT = Thallium measured in µg/L UUUT = measured in µg/L VVUT = vanadium measured in µg/L ZNUT = Zinc measured in µg/L NAME: common name of the tests above ALKALINITY; GRAN ALKALINITY; TOTAL FIXED ENDPT ALUMINUM ANIONS ANTIMONY ARSENIC BARIUM BERYLLIUM BORON CADMIUM CALCIUM CARBON; DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON; DISSOLVED ORGANIC CATIONS CHLORIDE CHROMIUM COBALT COLOUR; TRUE CONDUCTIVITY CONDUCTIVITY ESTIMATED COPPER ION BALANCE CALCULATION IRON LANGELIERS INDEX CALCULATION LEAD MAGNESIUM MANGANESE MOLYBDENUM NICKEL NITROGEN; AMMONIA+AMMONIUM NITROGEN; NITRATE+NITRITE NITROGEN; TOTAL NITROGEN; TOTAL KJELDAHL PH PHOSPHORUS; TOTAL POTASSIUM SATURATION PH ESTIMATED SELENIUM SILICON; REACTIVE SILICATE SILVER SODIUM SOLIDS; DISSOLVED ESTIMATED STRONTIUM SULPHATE THALLIUM TITANIUM URANIUM VANADIUM ZINC VALUE: This is just the measured value of the variable UNITS: Unit related to the value of the result obtained from TEST_NAME. The levels found are: %, meq/L, mg/L, mg/L CaCO3, TCU, ug/L, uS/cm REMARK: information about the sample and their ability to measure it. Chemistry database retrievals should include the laboratory remarks codes in order that the missing or invalid data may be identified and examined for editing. The following list includes only the most common codes reported in association with DESC sample submissions. <=W: < or equal to the min. repeated value, no measurable response (zero): < reported value |
