The targets for the survey are academic physicians (non-psychiatrists) who are members of the teaching staff in the academic teaching centres in which the young psychiatrists work. Potential respondents will be identified from publicly available staff directories (and/or web sites). Once identified, a random selection of individuals will be invited to complete a survey questionnaire.
The sample is stratified by career stage, in order to obtain sufficient numbers for sub-group analysis. Career stage was defined as Early (under 10 years in practice - typically less than 40 years old); Middle (11-25 years in practice - typically aged 41-55); Late (more than 25 years in practice - typically 56 or older).
A sample 10 per stratum (approximately 20% overall) allowed us to estimate population parameters with a maximum error of +/- 3% with an 80% power for the pooled sample. Some sites, such as Iran, over-sampled, thereby increasing the overall precision of our point estimates and allowing for more precise sub-group analyses.
A 37-item Perceptions of Psychiatry survey. Items were adapted and modified from existing survey instruments developed by Balon and colleagues in 1999 (which was an adaptation of a survey originated by Nielsen and Eaton in 1981) and by Burra and colleagues in 19823. Items measure:
Following the scoring approach used by Balon et al.,15 items are rated on a Likert-type agreement scale with four options: strongly agree, moderately agree, and moderately disagree, to strongly disagree.
