Custom Dataset Terms — the following Custom Dataset Terms have been defined for this dataset.

By accessing or using the Synbiotics for the Early Prevention of Severe Infections in Infants (SEPSiS) study dataset, you attest that you have read, understood, and agree to abide by the following terms of use. If you do not or are not authorized by your employer or affiliated institution to agree to abide by these terms, please do not access the dataset through Borealis, and instead contact the SEPSiS investigators directly through the “contact owner” function.

Purpose of the dataset: The SEPSiS dataset has been made publicly available for the purpose of advancing medical research to benefit society. The SEPSiS dataset can be freely accessed, used and redistributed by anyone, provided the data user attests to use the data for research and educational purposes only, in accordance with ethical research standards. Access to this dataset is in accordance with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) Global Open Access Policy, as BMGF was the original funder of the SEPSiS study. Commercial use of the SEPSiS dataset is not permitted. Researchers in the private sector are asked to contact SEPSiS investigators regarding data access, rather than access the data through this platform.

Data privacy: The dataset has been de-identified such that all personally identifying information has been removed. However, if data users become aware of any personal identifiers that may undermine participant confidentiality, they should discontinue accessing those data, delete any downloaded data from their desktop/hard drive, and are required to contact SEPSiS study investigators immediately. In such cases, it is the responsibility of users to ensure that publications or other public dissemination of results or information based on SEPSiS data access or analysis do not include any information that may inadvertently disclose the identity of a participant or participant’s family/household.

Data quality: All efforts have been made to ensure accuracy of the SEPSiS data; however, the dataset may contain errors or inaccuracies and is therefore subject to change without notice. If data users become aware of any potential errors within the dataset, the user should promptly inform SEPSiS study investigators to allow for modification.

Data integrity: Users of the SEPSiS dataset agree to use the data in a responsible and ethical manner in accordance with standard academic research practices. Users are responsible for ensuring that disseminated findings based on data access/analysis are fair, honest and comprehensive representations of the data. The SEPSiS investigators are not responsible for any misrepresentations of the dataset that arise from user errors in calculations or interpretations. Users are strongly encouraged to collaborate with researchers and/or community members with direct knowledge and experience in the context in which the data were generated in Bangladesh. Users should refrain from sharing SEPSiS data files with other users; rather, each user or user group should obtain datasets directly by downloading from Borealis. Users are responsible for checking the Borealis website at regular intervals to ensure they are using the most up-to-date version of any data file.

Data sharing: Knowledge gained through appropriate use of the SEPSiS dataset should be promptly and broadly disseminated. Publications arising from analysis of the SEPSiS dataset must be published under open access terms and conditions. Any fees associated with open access publication will be covered by the author accessing the dataset. Users are encouraged to consult the BMGF open access policy, which is available at: https://openaccess.gatesfoundation.org/open-access-policy/

Data citation: Users of the SEPSiS dataset agree to acknowledge the source of the data in all publications and presentations resulting from their use. Users are requested to use the standard data citation format available through the Borealis platform. The SEPSIS: L. Plantarum Trial and the SEPSIS Observational Cohort Study are registered with U.S. National Institutes of Health ClinicalTrials.gov (SEPSIS: L. Plantarum Trial ID: NCT05180201, Observational Cohort Study ID: NCT04012190). Users are encouraged to cite the ClinicalTrials.gov registration numbers when publishing or disseminating results of data analyses.

User conduct: Users should read and follow all guidance documents related to the dataset. Users are encouraged to contact the SEPSiS study investigators regarding use of the dataset but are not obligated to do so.

Modification of Terms: The SEPSiS study investigators may modify these terms of use at any time. Continued use of the dataset after modifications to the terms of use shall constitute the data user’s acceptance of such modifications.

Thank you for your interest in accessing the SEPSiS dataset. Please do not hesitate to contact SEPSiS study investigators if you have any questions or concerns relating to data usage
