Data archive for the NSERC Funded “CanBreach (Canadian Tailings Dam Breach Research) - an integrated tailings dam breach research and technology development project” aimed to improve our understanding of tailings dam breach processes through analysis of field events, laboratory experiments, and numerical simulations. This multi-institution research team brings together three Universities (UBC, Waterloo, Queen’s) with five key industry partners to work collaboratively to advance the current state of the art with regards to tailings dam safety.

Adria, Daniel; Ghahramani, Negar; Rana, Nahyan; Martin, Violeta; McDougall, Scott; Evans, Stephen; Take, Andy, 2023, "A database of breach and runout characteristics from historical tailings dam failures", https://doi.org/10.5683/SP3/JXT1XH, Borealis, V1, UNF:6:7+pMfF56pbDxbZeHas5pnw== [fileUNF]
This database includes observed characteristics from 12 tailings dam breach events, with a specific focus on observations that are needed for numerical modelling. The characteristics relevant to modelling include outflow volumes, breach processes, breach geometries, and runout ob...

Rana, Nahyan M.; Ghahramani, Negar; Evans, Stephen G.; Small, Andy; Skermer, Nigel; McDougall, Scott; Take, W. Andy, 2022, "Supplementary Materials to "Global Magnitude-Frequency Statistics of the Failures and Impacts of Large Water-Retention Dams and Mine Tailings Impoundments"", https://doi.org/10.5683/SP3/K7SANT, Borealis, V2, UNF:6:9G1UhaNZKVA1fyMP2qH+MQ== [fileUNF]
The failures of engineered dams that retain freshwater or mining waste (tailings) have led to socioeconomic and environmental consequences. However, the global magnitude-frequency statistics of these occurrences remain poorly quantified, out-of-date and/or limited in scope. Addre...

Tailings are finely ground waste rock produced as a by-product of standard mining projects as well as some industrial and power plant operations. Tailings are conventionally impounded behind a dam that is raised perpetually insofar as operations continue, thus amassing large volu...
