The Madrasa al-Jaqmaqiya was built for the Mamluk governor of Damascus, Saif al-Din Jaqmaq, between 1418–1420 (821–823 AH). Located just north of the Umayyad Mosque, it was built on the site of an earlier madrasa damaged by Timur’s invasion of Damascus in 1401 (803 AH).
